In a recent high-level meeting, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu sat down with executives from Flutterwave, Africa’s foremost payments technology company, to discuss strategies for driving economic growth and supporting Nigerian youth and small businesses.
The discussions, held against the backdrop of the country’s growing digital landscape, centered on enhancing youth empowerment, strengthening small and medium-sized enterprises, and expanding Nigeria’s digital economy. This meeting builds on a recent Memorandum of Understanding between the Federal Ministry of Youth Development and Flutterwave, which focuses on mentorship programs, access to start-up funding, and skill development for young Nigerians.
During the session, government officials and industry leaders stressed that Nigeria’s future lies in its dynamic youth population, which makes up more than 60 percent of the country. They pointed to innovative partnerships as a way to tap into this potential. In his remarks, President Tinubu highlighted that these initiatives form a core part of his Renewed Hope Agenda, aimed at creating jobs, empowering young people, and diversifying the economy.
Key figures in the meeting underscored the impact of such collaborations. The Honourable Minister for Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, emphasized the importance of programs like these in equipping young Nigerians with essential entrepreneurial skills. Likewise, leaders from SMEDAN and NITDA outlined how partnerships with Flutterwave would not only provide cutting-edge digital payment solutions and financial services but also bolster capacity-building and drive digital transformation across SMEs.
Flutterwave’s CEO, Olugbenga Agboola, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to supporting Nigerian businesses by leveraging technology to create sustainable economic impact. He stressed that public-private partnerships like this are critical to nurturing innovation and ensuring that Nigeria remains competitive in the global market.
As the meeting concluded, President Tinubu reiterated his administration’s dedication to fostering a robust, innovative, and inclusive digital economy. With a focus on empowering the next generation, the collaborative efforts discussed promise to open new avenues for economic growth and provide tangible support to Nigeria’s entrepreneurial community.
