AFWN 2017 : THE ICONIC AFRICA FASHION SHOWCASE
The Africa fashion week Nigeria 2017 has come and gone yet reviews of the largest fashion gathering is still raving. The Africa Fashion Week held on the 3rd and 4th of June 2107 at the iconic National Arts Theatre Lagos. The event attracted a number of fashion lovers in large numbers who turned the grounds of the venue to a “Mecca” of some sorts during the 2 day event.
The 4th edition of the fashion week in Nigeria , had a total of 84 participants in toll – 54 designers and 30 exhibitors drawn from across Nigeria and other neighboring African countries like Ghana , Cameroon , Zambia and Senegal.
Each day saw participants challenge our fashion senses with their creative print and non print fabrics alike, which were displayed and interpreted diversely by many of the designers.
African print fabric giants – Daviva and ABC wax stole the show on the first day working with a select crop of top Nigerian based designers in showcasing the versatility of the rich Ankara print fabric. Some of the designers in this category were – Bijelly Couture , Modella , Nipo Skin , Regalia , Maufechi , etc .
Other designers that showcased their pieces included, Step-Up an initiative owned by Her Excellency Mrs Dolapo Osinbajo, Wife of the Vice President of Nigeria, BG couture, Simply Sleek, Afrikawala( Zambia ), Oma couture and Veens gave a brilliant account of their brands on day one.
Day 2 was everything! The turn out was massive- Designers billed for the grand finale held nothing back as they schooled the crowd on trends for the coming season . From the hand painting of Sally Bawa’s cuts to the fabric on fabric embellishment of Del Afrca, each designer paraded their craft unapologetically. Other highlights of the day were Kola Kuddus‘s tie and dye concept and bling style of Marubuk both in the menswear show .Other designers of the day were Valery Azinge Atelier who wowed the crowd with their illustration to life designs , Blingshiki, Otrabybecca , Tash by Tasha Godwin , Stitches.
Dignitaries and fashion aficionados alike some of which were Honourable Mudasiru Obasa Speaker for the House of Representatives, Erelu of Lagos, Mrs Folawiyo, Mrs Nike of “Nike Art Gallery” This day Style Editor – Ruth Osime , Ego Boyo , The Royal fathers of AFWN, HIM Ooni of Ife represented by Oba Asoya and Oba Elejesi and HRH Kusenla the III , represented by the Acting Commissioner Lagos State Ministry of Transport Prince Lanre Elegushi, Mr Olusegun Awolowo, Honourable Funmi Tejuoso, The queen of Fashion Mrs Abba Folawiyo, Erelu
The London Edition of the Africa fashion week will be taking place at the Freemasons’ Hall in London on the 11th and 12th of August 2017.
