Nigerian Prodigy Breaks Guinness World Record with 12,303-Square-Meter Painting
A 15-year-old Nigerian artist, Kanyeyachukwu Tagbo Okeke, has made history by breaking the Guinness World Record for the Largest Painting. His record-breaking artwork, titled Impossible is a Myth, spans an incredible 12,303 square meters and will be officially unveiled on April 2, 2025.
A Masterpiece of Creativity and Resilience
Kanyeyachukwu, who is autistic, has used his artistic talent to push boundaries and inspire millions worldwide. His painting showcases abstract expressionism, reflecting both his unique perspective and the limitless possibilities of artistic expression.
The President of the Society of Nigerian Artists (SNA), Muhammad Sulaiman, praised Kanyeyachukwu’s journey, highlighting how his use of color has become a powerful tool for communication and advocacy.
“His work embodies the limitless potential of creativity. Impossible is a Myth allows us to glimpse into his vibrant mind and tells a compelling story of triumph over adversity,”Sulaiman stated.
Redefining Artistic Norms and Inclusivity
SNA’s General Secretary, Rowland Goyit, emphasized the broader significance of Kanyeyachukwu’s achievement, stating that his work challenges traditional artistic norms and reinforces the idea that art is a truly inclusive space.
“This milestone is more than a world record. It proves that neurodivergent individuals can make significant contributions to global culture and artistic discourse,”Goyit remarked.
A Journey of Perseverance and Dedication
Kanyeyachukwu’s father, Tagbo Okeke, described his son’s success as the result of structured guidance, passion, and perseverance.
“He discovered early on that color was a powerful form of self-expression. We developed a routine to help him stay focused while balancing his artistic passion with daily life,” he explained.
He also highlighted how art has played a transformative role in his son’s life.
“Beyond exhibitions and awards, the most important aspect is that he is a child living with autism. He was once completely non-verbal but is now partially verbal. Art has helped him find his voice,” Tagbo Okeke shared.
However, he acknowledged the challenges, including emotional distress when Kanyeyachukwu is unable to paint.
“People see the final masterpiece, but they don’t see the struggles—the meltdowns when he has to take a break. Many autistic children face similar challenges, and it’s important to teach them structure, social skills, and independence,” he added.
A Historic Unveiling and Global Impact
The record-breaking painting, Impossible is a Myth, was created using acrylic paint on an expansive canvas over a 12-week period. It will be unveiled at Eagle Square, Abuja, on April 2, 2025.
In addition to the unveiling, plans are underway for a national and international tour to showcase Kanyeyachukwu’s work. Educational and advocacy programs will accompany the exhibition to raise awareness about autism, promote inclusion, and highlight the transformative power of art.
