Ministries Activities and Functions in the State
MINISTRY OF JUSTICE
The Solicitor-General/Permanent Secretary reports to the Hon. Attorney-General/Commissioner. The Ministry has the following responsibilities:
(i) Legal Advice to Government;
(ii) Law Reporting and Review;
(ill) Legal Drafting;
MINISTRY OF FINANCE
The Permanent Secretary reports to the Hon. Commissioner. The responsibilities assigned to the Ministry are as follows:
(i) Advising on Authorization of expenditure from the Consolidated Revenue Fund;
(ii) Making advances from contingencies fund of the State;
(iii) Relationship with Federal Agencies like Revenue
MINISTRY OF AGRICULTURE
The Permanent Secretary reports to the Hon. Commissioner. The responsibilities assigned to the Ministry are as follows:
(i) Conservation of soil and water resources;
(ii) Farm and farming policies;
(iii) Irrigation matters;
MINISTRY OF WORKS
The Permanent Secretary reports to the Hon. Commissioner. The responsibilities assigned to the Ministry are as follows:
(i) State roads and bridges (construction and maintenance);
(ii) Regulation of traffic on State roads and bridges;
(iii) Road safety measures and control;
MINISTRY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY
The Permanent Secretary reports to the Hon. Commissioner. The responsibilities assigned to the Ministry are as follows:
(i) Technology assessment, acquisition and adaptation;
(ii) Development and promotion of Information Communication Technology (ICT);
(iii) Information/ communication technology policy;
MINISTRY OF PUBLIC UTILITIES AND WATER SUPPLY
The Permanent Secretary reports to the Hon. Commissioner. The responsibilities assigned to the Ministry are as follows:
(i) Water supply in the State;
(ii) Electricity Supply in the State;
(iii) Electricity and Water Policy;
MINISTRY OF COMMERCE AND INDUSTRY
The Permanent Secretary reports to the Hon. Commissioner. The responsibilities asigned to the Ministry are as follows:-
(i) Industrial and Commercial Policy;
(ii) Industrial Feasibility Studies;
(iii) Industrial Promotion
MINISTRY OF LANDS SURVEY AND URBAN PLANNING
The Permanent Secretary reports to the Hon. Commissioner. The responsibilities assigned to the Ministry are as follows:-
(i) Development and Maintenance of Open Spaces;
(ii) State Lands;
(iii) Acquisition of lands for public purposes;
MINISTRY OF HEALTH
The Permanent Secretary reports to the Hon. Commissioner. The responsibilities assigned to the Ministry are as follows: –
(i) Hospitals and Health Institutions;
(ii) Supervision of Hospitals Management Board;
(ill) Supervision of Abia State University Teaching Hospital (ABSUTH)
MINISTRY OF LOCAL GOVERNMENT AND CHIEFTAINCY AFFAIRS
The Permanent Secretary reports to the Hon. Commissioner. The responsibilities assigned to the Ministry are as follows:
(i) Chieftaincy Matters;
(ii) Secretariat for the State Council of Traditional Rulers;
(iii) Co-ordinate Local Government Matters;
MINISTRY OF PETROLEUM RESOURCES
The Permanent Secretary reports to the Hon. Commissioner. The responsibilitiesassigned to the Ministry are as follows:-
(i) Monitoring of Exploration and exploitation of Solid mineral deposits
(ii) Bulk storage and supply of petroleum products;
(iii) Monitoring of distribution of petroleum and petroleum products;
MINISTRY OF HOUSING AND URBAN DEVELOPMENT
The Permanent Secretary reports to the Hon. Commissioner. The responsibilities assigned to the Ministry are as follows:
(i) Furnishing of Government Buildings and Quarters;
(ii) Rent Control/Housing Policy;
MINISTRY OF WOMEN AFFAIRS
The Permanent Secretary reports to the Hon. Commissioner. The responsibilities assigned to the Ministry are as follows:-
(i) Women and Children’s Welfare;
(ii) Children’s Law;
(iii) Youth Development Centers;
MINISTRY OF SPORTS AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT
The Permanent Secretary reports to the Hon. Commissioner. The responsibilities assigned to the Ministry are as follows:
(i) Social Welfare Matters;
(ii) Welfare of the Blind and Disabled;
(in) Matters relating to Welfare in the Prisons;
(iv) Registration of Social Organizations;
MINISTRY OF POVERTY ALLEVIATION AND COOPERATIVES
The Permanent Secretary reports to the Hon. Commissioner. The responsibilities assigned to the Ministry are as follows:
(i) Liaison with CBOs, NGOs on poverty reduction matters;
(ii) Registration and management of cooperative societies and cooperative matters;
(iii) Enunciation of rural development programs;
MINISTRY OF YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
The Permanent Secretary reports to the Hon. Commissioner. The responsibilities assigned to the Ministry are as follows:
(i) Juvenile delinquency matters;
(ii) Youth Organization and Development;
(xiv) Supervision of Scholarship Board;
MINISTRY OF INFORMATION, CULTURE AND TOURISM
The Permanent Secretary reports to the Hon. Commissioner. The responsibilities assigned to the Ministry are as follows:
(i) Dissemination of information on Government Policies, Programs and activities;
(ii) Supervision of Abia Newspapers Corporation;
(iii) Film and public enlightenment;
MINISTRY OF ENVIRONMENT AND SOLID MINERALS DEVELOPMENT
